Sports Turf Technician

Job Details

Fowler's Turf & Grading is seeking an experienced equipment operator/ installer to help construct and maintain athletic fields, as well as golf courses. 

Under the general direction of the designated supervisor, performs large scale athletic field renovations, including installing erosion control, rough grading with earth moving equipment, coordinating topsoil deliveries, establishing new final grade, using & calibrating laser grade equipment, coordinating with irrigation and sod contractors and managing the new turf care until the facility is ready to re-open.
 

Essential Job Functions

·         Completes construction and renovation of fields, and grounds.

·         Manages materials and supplies for renovation projects.

·         Operates machinery, equipment, vehicles, and tools. (Operates machines, vehicles, and tools in safety standard; ensures that the proper tool, machinery, or vehicle is used to perform the task required.)

·         Performs outdoor maintenance. (Performs daily outdoor maintenance according to schedule.)

·         Performs inspection and basic repair of grounds equipment. (Completes basic repairs on grounds maintenance equipment, such as tractors, aerators, and mowers, per manufacturer's specifications, and advises supervisor when unit needs repair.)

·         Assists and trains co-workers.

·         May perform supervisor's duties in their absence.

·         May perform other essential job functions specific to the position and department assignment.

Illustrative Job Tasks

·         Performs laser grading operations with various pieces of equipment.

·         Manages individual job sites and contractors.

·         Performs various renovation projects as assigned.

·         Ensures assigned renovation projects are performed as assigned on facilities and grounds; completes and documents facility safety and maintenance checks to ensure site meets state and local standards for safety and cleanliness; reports maintenance problems to manager.

·         Keeps maintenance supervisor informed of site work activity and project progress.

·         Operates machines, vehicles, and tools, adhering to established safety standards; uses guards and personal protective equipment to protect self and others; ensures that equipment and vehicles are cleaned, greased, and stored properly; and reports needed repairs.

·         Completes monthly inventory of supplies; submits list of purchasing needs; and ensures safe and organized storage of materials and supplies.

·         May perform snow removal operations per County snow plan.

·         Assists in developing maintenance schedules for equipment and fields; ensures work orders are completed for customers time requirements.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, preferably with coursework in semi-skilled carpentry, basic trades, or landscaping based on assigned area; three (3) years of related work experience in grounds maintenance and/or renovation; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

·         Knowledge of methods, principles, practices, and techniques of grounds maintenance, field renovation and preparation, preventative maintenance, and building maintenance.

·         Knowledge of technical laser grading equipment, grading techniques and requirements, and related mathematics and geometry.

·         Knowledge of department policies and procedures as required.

·         Knowledge of job-related methods, skills, and techniques.

·         Knowledge of materials, equipment, and terminology required for grounds and indoor maintenance.

·         Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of work.

·         Skill in use of earth moving machinery.

·         Skill in safe and efficient use of maintenance tools.

·         Skill in organization, time management, and communication.

·         Ability to read grading and topographic plans.

·         Ability to master various types of grading equipment and to work independently.

·         Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with employees, supervisors, officials, co-workers, and the public.

·         Ability to estimate extent of renovation work needed.

·         Ability to interpret established methods, guidelines, and to ensure compliance with standards.

·         Ability to maintain records, logs, and necessary reports.

·         Ability to perform physical tasks required for designated duties.

·         Ability to identify and solve routine work-related problems.

·         Ability to understand and accurately follow oral and written directions.

·         Ability to understand and operate equipment for assigned tasks.

·         Ability to work from specifications, drawings, and blueprints.

Certification, License and Special Requirements

Pass pre-employment criminal, credit, and DMV background checks. Valid driver’s license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification).
Hold or obtain a CDL (Class A) within six (6) months of hire.

 Type of Work

Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects

Work Environment

·         Must be willing to work a flexible schedule that will include weekday, evening, and weekend hours.

·         Must be able to work on an as needed or recall basis or report as needed as assigned.

·         May be required to work beyond scheduled workday or on weekends and subject to call and recall.

·         May require adjusting schedule based on special events such as sports activities.

·         Designated as essential personnel. May be required to work 24/7 in case of County emergencies at alternate locations or performing alternate duties.

·         Must be able to lift sixty (60) pounds

·         May be required to oversee and participate in snow removal operations.

·         Must be able to work in extreme temperatures and in dusty or noisy conditions.

·         May be exposed to dust, heat, cold, wetness, fumes, noise, and/or vibrations.

·         Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others.

·         Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
