Nitrogen in turfgrass systems

If you have applied urea, or if thatch has gotten out of control and you just aerified; or if you inherited a property where someone put out a 2-inch layer of straw as compost, then how does all that affect N cycling, and how does the nutrient eventually get to the plant?
