Accurate weed identification is the first step toward effect control of undesirable weed species.
A new online tool from Syngenta promises to make identifying weeds and subsequent treatment options easier for professional turfgrass managers, sod producers and lawn care operators.
Created by Syngenta turf technical services professionals and researchers throughout the country, the Syngenta Weed Identification Guide sorts more than 80 weed species by warm- and cool-season turf types, annual vs. perennial weeds and pre-emergent or post-emergent control.

“This guide reflects significant collaboration and industry expertise and we hope users find it to be a valuable tool that helps them be more efficient and successful with their weed management strategies,” said Stephanie Schwenke, turf market manager for Syngenta.
The guide provides clear visuals, outlines key identification characteristics, provides tips to help distinguish between similar weed species, guidance for controlling each weed and insights for developing weed management strategies.
Specifically, the guide provides high-resolution imagery of each weed along with:
- Scientific Name
- Weed Family
- Life Cycle
- Propagules
- Distribution
- Tips for Visual Identification
- Cultural Management Tips
- Control Tips
“Proper identification is essential for effective weed management,” said Matt Giese, Syngenta’s technical services manager for turf in the Midwest. “Without it, it’s difficult to select the right approach for control. Our goal with this guide is to simplify identification and provide treatment recommendations to help turf managers confidently take the next steps for control.”
